More than 170 Democrats voted against a Republican-led measure honoring the “extraordinary sacrifice” of law enforcement officers. The resolution passed the House in a 243-173, with all 173 votes against it coming from Democrats.
Rep. Zach Nunn (R-IA), who led the measure, said, “It shouldn’t be controversial to stand with the men and women who put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe.”
“But from the ‘defund the police’ radicalism to sanctuary city policies that prevent cooperation with federal law enforcement, too many politicians have put ideology ahead of public safety — and Americans are paying the price,” he continued. “This Police Week, the House sent a clear message: we back the blue. I’m proud to have led that effort.”
House Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-MI) similarly said, “While Democrats spent years demonizing police officers and pushing soft-on-crime policies, Republicans are standing with the men and women who put on the badge and keep our communities safe.”
Chairwoman McClain said, “They protect our families, remove deadly drugs from our streets, and hold the line between order and chaos. I am proud to back the blue because Americans deserve safe neighborhoods and leaders who respect the people risking their lives to protect them.”
The resolution condemns the “rhetoric and policies from leftist activists and progressive politicians” that “seek to defund or dismantle local police departments” and “undermine public safety,” as well as “sanctuary city policies that restrict cooperation with Federal immigration authorities can compel local law enforcement agencies to divert already limited resources and actively encourage resentment toward local law enforcement.”
