The White House released a framework for national AI standards, pushing the country toward innovation.
“The Administration recognizes that some Americans feel uncertain about how this transformative technology will affect issues they care about, like their children’s wellbeing or their monthly electricity bill,” the White House article says. “These issues, along with other emerging AI policy considerations, require strong Federal leadership to ensure the public’s trust in how AI is developed and used in their daily lives.”
According to the framework, the national standard “should respect key principles of federalism.” It will not preempt the “traditional police powers retained by the states to enforce laws of general applicability against AI developers and users, including particular laws to protect children, prevent fraud, and protect consumers.”
The framework adds that individual states “should not be permitted to regulate AI development, because it is an inherently interstate phenomenon with key foreign policy and national security implications.”
The White House previously revealed its “AI Action Plan,” which White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios said charts a “decisive course to cement U.S. dominance in artificial intelligence.”
“President Trump has prioritized AI as a cornerstone of American innovation, powering a new age of American leadership in science, technology, and global influence,” Kratsios stated. “This plan galvanizes Federal efforts to turbocharge our innovation capacity, build cutting-edge infrastructure, and lead globally, ensuring that American workers and families thrive in the AI era. We are moving with urgency to make this vision a reality.”
