Google’s Gemini AI platform flagged seven sitting Republican senators, Vice President JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as violators of its hate speech policies after evaluating all 100 U.S. senators. No Democrats were cited.
Breitbart’s social media director, Wynton Hall, asked Gemini’s deep research feature to evaluate all current senators against the platform’s own hate speech standards and list those who had violated them. The AI returned a 3,400-word report flagging nine conservatives and no one else.
The nine: Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN), Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Vice President JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Gemini also incorrectly listed Vance and Rubio as sitting senators.
The reasoning Gemini gave for its verdicts read like a left-wing activist briefing. Tuberville was flagged for using the word “invasion” to describe illegal immigration. Blackburn was cited for saying transgender identity is a harmful cultural “influence.” Hawley was accused of using “QAnon-influenced tropes.” Cotton was faulted for calling gay rights and diversity initiatives “misplaced priorities.” Vance was flagged for “rhetoric targeting gender-diverse individuals.” Rubio was accused of labeling Pride symbols prohibited ideology. Hagerty was cited for opposing same-sex marriage protections based on “exclusionary traditional values.” Scott was flagged for using “demographic threat” language about immigration. Hyde-Smith was cited for past comments on racial violence and voting.
The sources Gemini drew on for its analysis included the Southern Poverty Law Center, GLAAD, Human Rights Watch, and Wikipedia.
This isn’t the first time Google’s AI has generated controversy targeting conservatives. In February 2024, Gemini’s image generator produced historically scrambled results including female popes, black Vikings, and non-white Founding Fathers. The backlash wiped roughly $90 billion from Google’s market value. A separate Google model, Gemma AI, falsely accused Sen. Blackburn of sexual assault in November 2025. Blackburn wrote to Google CEO Sundar Pichai at the time calling it “a catastrophic failure of oversight and ethical responsibility.”
