President Donald Trump’s pledge to avenge fallen U.S. service members signals a deepening conflict with Iran and a potentially prolonged military campaign. In a somber video statement Sunday, Trump honored the three Americans killed in action and warned the confrontation may intensify before it concludes.
“As one nation, we grieve for the true American patriots who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation,” Trump said. He added, “America will avenge their deaths and deliver the most punishing blow to the terrorists who have waged war.” Trump also cautioned that “sadly, there will likely be more before it ends.”
The president confirmed that U.S. forces struck “hundreds of targets” inside Iran, targeting Revolutionary Guard facilities, air defense systems, and naval assets. He said the U.S. “knocked out nine Iranian ships in a matter of literally minutes” and pledged operations would continue “until all of our objectives are achieved.” Trump described Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as “this wretched and vile man” who “had the blood of hundreds and even thousands of Americans on his hands.”
The Pentagon has positioned two carrier strike groups — the USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Gerald R. Ford — in the region, supported by more than a dozen additional warships. The buildup reflects what Trump previously called an “armada” assembled to apply decisive pressure.
Tehran has vowed retaliation. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called avenging Khamenei’s death a “legitimate duty and right,” declaring Iran “will forcefully crush the enemy’s bases.” Missile and drone strikes have already targeted U.S. installations in Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Iraq, though U.S. Central Command disputes Iranian claims of major success.
Federal authorities have increased security nationwide as tensions ripple beyond the Middle East.
