President Donald Trump unleashed a scathing rebuke of former special counsel Jack Smith on Thursday as Smith testified before the House Judiciary Committee. In a Truth Social post, Trump declared Smith was being “decimated” by lawmakers, particularly over his politically charged prosecutions related to classified documents and the January 6 Capitol incident.
“Deranged Jack Smith is being DECIMATED before Congress,” Trump wrote. “It was over when they discussed his past failures and unfair prosecutions. He destroyed many lives under the guise of legitimacy.”
Trump accused Smith of partisanship, stating, “Jack Smith is a deranged animal, who shouldn’t be allowed to practice Law. If he were a Republican, his license would be taken away from him, and far worse!”
He also called for Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate Smith’s conduct, particularly his reliance on allegedly corrupt witnesses in ongoing legal efforts against Trump. “The whole thing was a Democrat SCAM — A big price should be paid by them for what they have put our Country through!” Trump said.
The House Judiciary hearing brought renewed focus to Smith’s conduct, with Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) confronting him over surveillance of congressional communications. Issa accused Smith of acting as President Joe Biden’s political weapon, saying, “You were their arm, weren’t you?” Smith denied the claim.
Issa pressed further on whether Smith informed judges that he was seeking records related to communications between the Speaker of the House and the President. Smith claimed, “My office didn’t spy on anyone,” but the exchange intensified as Issa raised concerns over gag orders and constitutional overreach.
The hearing follows months of mounting criticism of Smith, who led high-profile investigations targeting Trump while avoiding scrutiny of Biden family dealings. Republicans have increasingly framed Smith’s actions as political lawfare—using federal prosecutions to disrupt Trump’s 2024 campaign and shield the sitting administration from accountability.
With Trump now surging in the polls and heading into a critical election year, the hearing marks another chapter in the ongoing battle over the weaponization of the Department of Justice. Congressional Republicans are vowing further oversight and potential legal reforms to prevent future abuse.
