Chicago 4th: Deadly Independence Day Weekend Leaves Dozens Shot, City Silent

A violent Chicago 4th of July weekend left more than 50 people shot and six dead, exposing once again the city’s ongoing crime crisis and the failure of Democrat leadership to protect its citizens. Between midnight Thursday and Sunday night, multiple mass shootings and drive-by attacks rocked Chicago’s streets, according to ABC 7.

One of the most brutal attacks occurred Saturday morning when shooters in an SUV opened fire on a car in Little Village, critically injuring three of the four victims. That same day, a 46-year-old man was gunned down while sitting in his vehicle in Lake View. Police have a suspect in custody in that case. Just hours later, officers discovered a 30-year-old man shot in the head on the West Side.

On Friday night alone, the South Side exploded in gunfire. A 36-year-old man, Marco A. Velasquez-Sierra, was found shot in the head and pronounced dead. Minutes later, two suspects opened fire on a crowd, injuring seven. Another suspect shot and killed 16-year-old Meeyah Smith, who died from a gunshot wound to the throat.

The violence began early Thursday morning with a deadly attempted robbery and two separate mass shootings, including one that injured four people.

Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Police Department have remained largely silent despite the continued bloodshed.

“This is what happens when weak leadership and soft-on-crime policies take priority over law and order,” one South Side resident told ABC 7 anonymously.
