‘Heartbreaking’: 21‑Year‑Old Congressional Intern Killed in DC Shooting

A 21-year-old congressional intern, Eric Tarpinian‑Jachym from Granby, Massachusetts, was fatally shot near the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., late Monday. The finance major and political science minor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst was interning for Congressman Ron Estes (R‑KS) when struck by a spray of bullets fired from a vehicle believed to have targeted another person.

Metropolitan Police responded around 10:28 p.m. on July 1, discovering Eric unconscious with gunshot wounds. A woman and a 16-year-old boy were also injured but survived. Police recovered the suspect vehicle and continue to investigate; a $25,000 reward is offered for information leading to an arrest.

Congressional colleagues, including Rep. Estes and Rep. Richard Neal, praised Eric’s dedication and kindness. Estes recalled his cheerful greetings as he entered the office. Neal expressed deep sorrow as a father, urging prayers for Eric’s family.

Eric’s death marks the 85th homicide in D.C. this year, a city still wrestling with a persistent homicide rate even after a drop from 2023’s peak. Authorities appeal for witnesses or tips via text or call to assist the investigation.

The tragedy spotlights the risks public servants face—even as bystanders. Eric’s promising future in public service was cut short. His family, colleagues, and friends now wait for answers and justice.
