Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser shared that her meeting with President-elect Donald Trump on Monday was “great.” She stated that both she and Trump “want Washington, DC to be the best, most beautiful city in the world and we want the capital city to reflect the strength of our nation.”
“We discussed areas for collaboration between local and federal government, especially around our federal workforce, underutilized federal buildings, parks and green spaces, and infrastructure,” she said in a statement. “I am optimistic that we will continue to find common ground with the President during his second term, and we look forward to supporting a successful inauguration on January 20.”
Bowser and Trump met at Mar-a-Lago for about 45 minutes, Reuters reported. The meeting was held at Bowser’s request.
Four years ago, Bowser declared that a portion of the street leading up to the White House would be called “Black Lives Matter Plaza.” The street was pained to read, “Defund the Police.”
In 2023, D.C. homicides were up 34% from 2022. Violent crime increased by 40% from 2022 to 2023, according to crime data.
Trump declared during a rally at Madison Square Garden that his administration will “rebuild our cities, including our capital in Washington D.C., which has become a very dangerous and badly managed place. We’re going to make them safe, clean and beautiful again. We will teach our children to love our country, to honor our history, and to always respect our great American flag.”
Last year, Trump asserted that D.C. was to be the “crown jewel” of the United States.
