Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi announced his resignation on Tuesday, citing the military’s inability to anticipate the deadly Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. His resignation, effective March 6, 2025, comes alongside the intended resignation of Major General Yaron Finkelman, head of the IDF Southern Command.
In his official statement, Halevi expressed his acknowledgment of responsibility for the failures of October 7 while emphasizing the IDF’s recent achievements and ongoing efforts:
“By virtue of my recognition of my responsibility for the IDF’s failure on October 7th, and at a time when the IDF has significant achievements… I have requested to leave my role on March 6th, 2025. Until then, I will complete the IDF’s inquiries into the events of October 7th and strengthen the IDF’s readiness for security challenges.”
The resignations follow the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, ending significant combat operations in Gaza. Halevi, who had already hinted at stepping down after the war, will focus on preparing the IDF for future challenges and ensuring a smooth transition to his successor.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has yet to comment on the resignations. However, Netanyahu announced a new counter-terror operation, “Iron Wall,” targeting Jenin in the Palestinian-controlled West Bank.
Criticism toward Netanyahu has grown in the wake of the October 7 attack, with calls from some Israelis for him to resign. Netanyahu has rejected such demands, promising thorough investigations into the failures and accountability after the conflict.
This leadership shift marks a significant moment for Israel’s military as it seeks to rebuild and address the gaps exposed during the surprise Hamas attack.
