Texas Police Officer Suffers Serious Injury After Suspect Flees in Car

A Beaumont, Texas, police officer sustained a severe head injury while attempting to stop a fleeing suspect outside a crowded sports bar on Friday night. The dramatic incident, captured on video by a bystander, shows the officer being thrown from the back of a moving car and rendered unconscious after hitting the pavement.

The officer was responding to a disturbance in the parking lot of Little Woodrow’s sports bar on Phelan Boulevard. According to the Beaumont Police Department, the confrontation began when the officer detained and handcuffed a woman involved in the altercation. A second woman, identified as 28-year-old Jamaysha Butler, became agitated and entered a red convertible in an apparent attempt to flee the scene.

As Butler started the engine, the officer ran to the vehicle, jumping onto the back just as she reportedly sped away. The officer fell from the car and hit his head on the pavement, sustaining a brain bleed. Onlookers in the parking lot screamed, with one man rushing to assist the unconscious officer.

The officer was hospitalized and treated for his injuries, spending two nights under medical care before being released on Sunday. Authorities have not disclosed his identity.

Police quickly identified and apprehended Butler in the 3800 block of Kings Row. She faces multiple charges, including intoxication assault, evading detention, and causing serious bodily injury to a peace officer. A second suspect, 22-year-old Melissa Bell, was also arrested. Bell faces charges of public intoxication, resisting arrest, interfering with public duties, assault on a peace officer, and outstanding warrants.

The Beaumont Police Department released a statement detailing the incident, noting that the mugshots provided for Butler and Bell were from prior arrests. This incident highlights the dangers officers face in the line of duty and the critical need for compliance during law enforcement encounters.
