Illinois Teenager Charged Over Threatening to ‘Shoot Up’ Elementary School On TikTok

An 18-year-old woman from Des Plaines has been charged with disorderly conduct following allegations that she made threats to “shoot up” a suburban elementary school in September.

Authorities identified Esmeralda E. Vargas as the suspect after receiving an anonymous tip alerting school officials to a disturbing TikTok post. The post reportedly praised the Uvalde school shooter as an “idol” and specifically mentioned North Elementary School as a target, according to Des Plaines police.

The Des Plaines Police Department, in collaboration with Community Consolidated School District 62 and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, promptly activated a crisis response protocol to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Investigators worked closely with TikTok to trace the account responsible for the post, leading them to Vargas’s residence on East Willow Avenue. A search, conducted with the cooperation of Vargas’s parents, revealed no firearms. Additionally, District 62 officials issued a trespass order barring Vargas from accessing any district properties.

Further investigation uncovered additional threatening messages exchanged on TikTok. Based on this evidence, Vargas voluntarily surrendered to authorities on Monday. She has been charged with one felony count of disorderly conduct. In accordance with Illinois law, Vargas was cited and released.

Law enforcement and school officials emphasized their commitment to swiftly addressing threats to public safety while continuing to work diligently to protect the community.
