Allegations of Sexual Misconduct Surface Against PinkNews Founders

PinkNews, the world’s largest LGBTQI+ news website, faces serious allegations of sexual misconduct, bullying, and workplace harassment. Founders Benjamin Cohen and Anthony James, who is also a director, have been accused by former employees of inappropriate behavior, particularly towards younger male staff. The accusations span a seven-year period from 2017 to 2024.

The BBC interviewed 33 current and former employees, who alleged a workplace culture of heavy drinking and misconduct at PinkNews events. Witnesses claim that Anthony James kissed and touched a junior colleague who appeared too intoxicated to consent. A BBC documentary revealed internal emails, official complaints, WhatsApp messages, and medical records tying employees’ mental health struggles to their work environment.

Cohen and James have denied the allegations through representatives but have not issued a formal statement.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s office called the allegations “very concerning” but refrained from addressing specific claims. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, who attended the PinkNews Awards in 2022, has not confirmed if he would associate with the organization moving forward.

Founded in 2005, PinkNews is widely known for its coverage of LGBTQI+ issues and has hosted interviews with major figures, including Rishi Sunak and Jeremy Corbyn. Previous UK Prime Ministers Boris Johnson, David Cameron, and Tony Blair have also contributed to the platform.

As PinkNews faces scrutiny, the case raises questions about accountability in media organizations that advocate for inclusivity while allegedly fostering toxic workplace environments. The controversy threatens to impact the site’s reputation and its connections to political and social leaders.
