House Speaker Mike Johnson, standing alongside 2024 presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump on Friday afternoon, announced that House Republicans are introducing legislation to mandate proof of American citizenship for voters before casting their ballots.
“What we’re going to do is introduce legislation to require that every single person who registers to vote in a federal election must prove that they are a citizen first. They have to prove it. That will be a new part of the federal law and a very important one.”
“Our bill will establish new safeguards, it’ll put us on par with, by the way, with virtually every other democracy around the world that also prohibits noncitizen voting.”
“And this is a critical thing for us to do at a very critical time.”
Johnson emphasized that the proposed legislation will compel states to remove noncitizens from their voter rolls.
Addressing the situation at the southern border, Johnson questioned why Democrats would tolerate the chaos, suggesting it was “because they want to turn these people into voters.”
