Long-Term Ukraine Contracting Suspended

The United States government has suspended the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) and Foreign Military Financing (FMF) contracting initiatives.

U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said during a press briefing that short-term security assistance for Ukraine will continue, “USAI funding has been suspended” and “FMF funding has been suspended.”

“Those are the contracting programs that allow us to contract for Ukraine in the long-term.”

According to a U.S. official, $5.4 billion is still available for Ukraine programs and will likely be used to send U.S. weapons to Ukraine.

The unnamed U.S. official added that only $1.6 billion remains out of the $25.9 billion previously approved by Congress.

The $1.6 billion is to be used to replenish U.S. military stockpiles.

Reporting from Sputnik:

Media reported earlier, citing Pentagon officials, that the remaining funding for Ukraine should last about six months.

On Saturday, Congress passed a short-term spending bill that did not include additional assistance for Ukraine. However, the shot-term spending bill gives lawmakers until November 17 to consider full-term spending legislation for next year, including more funding for Ukraine.
