A recent survey has revealed that a significant majority of Americans believe that President Biden’s age might impede his efficacy should he secure a second term.
In this latest poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs, a staggering 77% of Americans expressed concerns about Biden’s ability to serve effectively, given his age, according to The Hill.
This sentiment transcends party lines, with 89% of Republicans and 69% of Democrats sharing this belief.
Interestingly, the question of age doesn’t solely revolve around Biden.
When asked about former President Trump, who is only marginally younger than Biden, about 50% of those surveyed felt that he too is past the age of being an effective leader.
Notably, the data highlighted that Democrats were more inclined to express concerns over Trump’s age impacting his performance.
It’s worth noting that the reservations surrounding the age of potential leaders aren’t confined to the youth.
The poll found that the skepticism was echoed across all age demographics, dispelling any notion that it’s primarily a perspective of younger generations.
Amid these sentiments, there’s a rising call for age restrictions in the echelons of U.S. leadership.
Across the spectrum of Democrats, Republicans, and independents, there’s a palpable desire to see age limits established for roles in the presidency, Congress, and even the Supreme Court.
Specifically, the survey indicated that 66% support age limits for presidential candidates, while 68% support limits for the House and the Senate.
Furthermore, 67% support a mandatory retirement age for the Supreme Court.
The study, which offers a comprehensive snapshot of the nation’s stance on the age of its leaders, was carried out between August 10-14 with a representative sample of 1,165 U.S. adults.
The data carries a margin of error at 3.8 percentage points.
