The Wagner Group confirmed the deaths of Yevgeny Prigozhin and his deputy Dmitry Utkin following a plane crash in the Tver region.
The Embraer RA-02795 was en route for Pulkovo but disappeared 26 minutes after taking off from Seremetyevo.
Seven passengers and three crew members were on board the aircraft.
The Federal Aviation Agency is investigating the accident.
Footage of the wreckage was posted on social media.
Another aircraft belonging to the Wagner Group was in the air at the time of the crash, but changed course and landed in Moscow.
