U.S. Solder Travis King in North Korean Custody

North Korea said that it has custody of U.S. soldier Travis King.

The Soldier ran across the border from South Korea on July 18.

The United Nations Command North Korea “responded to the United Nations Command with regards to [Private 2nd Class] King.”

“In order not to interfere with our efforts to get him home, we will not go into details at this time,” the agency continued.

North Korea has not announced publicly that they have custody of King.

King served two months in South Korean detention for assault.

Upon being released on July 10, he fled to North Korea.

King was supposed to go to the United States for disciplinary action.

Reporting from BBC:

In recent years, a number of American citizens who illegally entered North Korea - excluding those convicted of criminal activity there - have been released within six months.

The detention of the soldier presents a major foreign policy headache for US President Joe Biden. PV2 King is believed to be the only American citizen currently in North Korean custody. Six South Koreans remain in detention there.
