Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher was questioned by the House Judiciary Committee on the organization’s various failures.
According to Wray, the top 8 officials in the FBI represent the “best” of the organization.
Republicans noted that Special Counsel John Durham wrote in his report that the FBI lacked evidence to open the 2016 Russian collusion investigation and discovered the agency violated the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA)
Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) asked Wray how many times the FBI allegedly abused the FISA database, to which Wray failed to confirm the number or offer an explanation.
“Again, I don’t have the numbers as I sit here right now,” Wray said.
“It seems like a number you should know, how many times the FBI is breaking the law under your watch,” Gaetz responded, although Wray admitted there have been agency “failures.”
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) then questioned Wray on the Richmond FBI field office memo, which mentioned “radical traditional Catholics.”
Wray stated the memo is part of an “internal review” and that he has “ordered it removed from the FBI systems.”
Jordan asked for a copy of the memo and to speak to the FBI agency behind it, but Wray did not offer a response.
Reporting from Just the News:
California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa asked Wray if one or more FBI agents entered the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 and Wray would not answer. He instead referred Issa to court filings. Other lawmakers asked similar questions and Wray said his office would make the relevant court filings available to the committee. Throughout the hearing, Wray emphasized that the overall law enforcement operation that the FBI's workforce of 38,000 is doing has been effective, from record fentanyl seizures to taking violent criminals off the streets.
