During a May 27, 2025, interview on CNN, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) dismissed concerns about the Democratic Party’s public perception when questioned by anchor John Berman. Berman referenced a New York Times report highlighting focus group findings where participants likened Democrats to “tortoises, slugs, or sloths,” suggesting a view of the party as slow and passive. One participant described Democrats as “deer in headlights,” indicating a perception of indecisiveness.
When asked for her response, Wasserman Schultz stated, “I’m not focused on the animals that some New York Times reporter compares the political parties to. My constituents are human beings.” She emphasized her commitment to addressing issues like healthcare cuts affecting her constituents, rather than engaging with metaphorical comparisons.
Berman clarified that the animal comparisons originated from voter responses in a Democratic-led focus group, not from reporters. Wasserman Schultz countered by criticizing the framing of the focus group questions, stating, “They were prompted to compare the parties to animals. That is ridiculous.” She reiterated her focus on policy matters impacting her constituents.
The New York Times report also noted the Democratic Party’s ongoing struggles with public image, citing low favorability ratings in recent polls. An April Fox News poll showed only 41% of respondents viewed the party favorably, while a March survey reported just 27% with a positive view.
