Washington, D.C. Residents Demand Airbnb Blackout for Trump Inauguration

Washington, D.C. residents are removing their listings from Airbnb ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s January inauguration.

According to The Washington Post, residents are calling for like-minded Airbnb hosts to blackout the dates surrounding the inauguration or increase their prices, donating the profits to liberal organizations.

Stacy Kane and two friends sent an email to community groups and city council members, declaring that the goal for the Airbnb effort is to “show Trump supporters who are coming into the DMV that we do not welcome hate, misogyny, or intentions to take over DC.”

The initiative stemmed from a desire to “try to make any kind of difference that we can in the situation we find ourselves in as D.C. residents and just as human beings right now,” Kane said.

Elliott Ferguson, CEO of Destination DC, told the Washington Post that “stuff like that always happens.”

“People will stay ‘let’s protest’ and some will, but most won’t. They’ll try to find a way to maximize revenue,” Ferguson explained.

Only four people have signed up for Kane’s effort, the Washington Post noted. The outlet added that more than 950 rentals are available for the weekend leading up to the inauguration.
