Left-wing comedian Wanda Sykes lashed out at white Americans during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Monday, demanding they feel “embarrassed” for supporting President Donald Trump. Her comments came amid a string of inaccurate claims and political attacks that drew applause from the liberal late-night audience.
Sykes began her tirade after Colbert brought up a media-manufactured controversy involving Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and his reported use of the Signal app for communications. Sykes falsely claimed that Hegseth “did text war plans,” despite no evidence to support the accusation.
Turning her attention to Trump, Sykes declared the administration “embarrassing, incompetent, corrupt,” and then targeted white voters directly. “I have to say to white people, y’all really should be embarrassed by this. Y’all really need to do something, seriously,” she said. She excused black Americans, saying they were “busy” and “doing dances.”
Sykes went on to encourage protests and urged more radical action against Trump’s leadership. “I see you out there protesting. Keep up the good work. But you’ve got to amp it up,” she added.
What Sykes failed to mention is that Trump’s support among minority voters has reached record levels for a Republican candidate. In the 2024 election, exit polls showed President Trump making unprecedented gains among black and Latino voters — especially black men.
CNN analyst Harry Enten, reviewing the data last November, admitted that Trump had outperformed every GOP nominee in 50 years with black voters. “The breadth of the improvement Donald Trump had… holy Toledo!” Enten remarked, noting that such support was unthinkable just eight years ago.
Sykes’ attempt to shame white voters while ignoring Trump’s diverse coalition highlights the ongoing disconnect between liberal entertainers and the real, shifting dynamics of the American electorate.
