Kimmel Claims 1,200% Vasectomy Surge After Trump Win, Tied to Planned Parenthood
Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel recently claimed that vasectomy rates spiked by 1,200% following Donald Trump’s election victory, attributing the trend to fears of future healthcare restrictions. On his show, Kimmel quipped, “That’s the sign of a great incoming president: when people stop wanting to have children in the United States.”
Kimmel’s claim originated from Planned Parenthood, which reported the figure. Former Planned Parenthood president Alexis McGill Johnson echoed the statistic on MSNBC, linking the surge to concerns over potential funding cuts to the organization and the broader state of “sexual and reproductive health care.”
There are several issues with this narrative. No Republican leader, including Trump, has proposed banning vasectomies. The rise may instead reflect liberal fears over the possible impact of pro-life electoral victories on abortion policies. However, Trump campaigned as a centrist on abortion, and no major pro-life legislative priorities have emerged since his win.
Critics note the contradiction in reacting to an election with irreversible personal decisions like vasectomies. Conservatives have also humorously remarked that fewer liberals reproducing after GOP victories is unlikely to spark complaints on the right.
Planned Parenthood’s funding and role remain hot topics in political debates, but the organization’s claim of a vasectomy surge highlights the ongoing cultural divide over reproductive health and individual responses to political outcomes.
