An investigation unfolded early Monday after a man damaged property at Vice President JD Vance’s home in Cincinnati, prompting a response from the U.S. Secret Service. The incident occurred shortly after midnight, when agents detained an adult male accused of vandalizing the residence. Authorities later confirmed the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
According to the U.S. Secret Service, agents “physically detained the adult male shortly after midnight” after property damage was reported at the vice president’s home. The agency stated the suspect caused damage including “breaking windows on the exterior of a personal residence.” FOX 19 in Cincinnati identified the suspect as 26-year-old William DeFoor, who was booked into jail Monday on charges including vandalism, obstruction of official business, criminal damaging or endangering, and criminal trespass.
Officials emphasized that the home was unoccupied at the time. “The residence was unoccupied at the time of the incident, and the Vice President and his family were not in Ohio,” the Secret Service said. A spokesperson for Vice President Vance confirmed the family had already returned to Washington, D.C.
Vice President Vance addressed the incident in a public statement later Monday. “I appreciate everyone’s well wishes about the attack at our home,” Vance said. “As far as I can tell, a crazy person tried to break in by hammering the windows. I’m grateful to the secret service and the Cincinnati police for responding quickly.”
Court records show DeFoor has faced multiple criminal cases in Hamilton County, often involving findings related to mental competency. The U.S. Secret Service continues to work with local police and federal prosecutors as charges are reviewed.
