Vice President JD Vance outlined the administration’s vision for artificial intelligence (AI) development during his keynote speech at the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit in Paris. His remarks emphasized innovation, economic growth, and national security, rejecting excessive regulation that could hinder technological advancement or lead to ideological censorship.
Vance called for an open and forward-looking approach to AI policy, stressing the importance of America’s leadership in the AI sector. He highlighted AI’s potential to drive economic growth, enhance national security, and revolutionize industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, and defense.
Vance emphasized the vast potential of emerging technologies while also cautioning against the risks of overregulation:
“We face the extraordinary prospect of a new industrial revolution, one on par with the invention of the steam engine or Bessemer steel, but it will never come to pass if overregulation deters innovators from taking the risks necessary to advance the ball, nor will it occur if we allow AI to become dominated by massive players looking to use the tech to censor or control users’ thoughts…We believe that excessive regulation of the AI sector could kill a transformative industry just as it’s taking off.”
Vance reaffirmed that the Trump administration will take a measured approach to AI policy, balancing innovation with necessary safeguards to prevent the misuse of AI by bad actors. Vance stated: “We want to ensure the Internet is a safe place, but it is one thing to prevent a predator from preying on a child on the Internet, and it is something quite different to prevent a grown man or woman from accessing an opinion that the government thinks is misinformation.”
Vance pledged that the U.S. will work with allies to establish pro-innovation AI policies, focusing on economic prosperity and security rather than restrictive government controls: “We will safeguard American AI and chip technologies from theft and misuse, work with our allies and partners to strengthen and extend these protections, and close pathways to adversaries attaining AI capabilities that threaten all of our people.”
Vice President JD Vance reaffirmed America’s leadership in AI, advocating for innovation over regulation. Under the Trump administration, the U.S. will harness AI’s potential to drive economic growth, create jobs, and uphold American values of freedom and opportunity.
