Vice President JD Vance addressed discussions that he may run for president in 2028, telling CBS Sunday Morning that he expects President Trump to support him should he decide to do so.
“After the midterm elections, we know you’re focused on the midterm elections now, will you and your family make a decision about whether you will seek the Republican nomination?” a reporter asked Vance.
“Well, we certainly have to make a decision about something,” Vance responded. “I’m blessed to have this job, honored to have this job until January 20th of 2029, and Usha and I will absolutely sit down and talk about what comes next for our family.”
He explained that people assume he is currently weighing the issue, although he does not make decisions “until I absolutely must.”
“What’s your gut at this point knowing it’s early?” the reporter asked. “Do you lean toward running or not?”
“When I make a decision, what am I thinking about? Am I thinking about what’s good for my political future 3 years down the road? Or am I thinking about what’s good for the American people right now?” Vance said. “To do this job the right way, you have to be thinking about what’s good right now. I can’t be a crappy vice president because I’m so worried about my political future. I just got to do a good job right now. The politics will take care of itself.”
He also noted in the interview that he has “no doubt that the president of the United States is going to be very supportive of anything that I ultimately decide to do. But we really just haven’t talked about what that thing will be.”
When asked if President Trump is encouraging Vance to run, the vice president said, “It’s not positive or negative. It’s just … he kind of talks about it, like, ‘What’s gonna happen,’ you know? ‘How do we make sure that we’re successful? What does that mean for the future?’ It’s more of a conversation like that.”
“So, we talk about it, but not in any great detail,” he added. “Because, again, I think both of us are focused on the here-and-now.”
President Trump has previously indicated that he would back a Vance-Rubio ticket. “Who likes J.D. Vance? Who likes Marco Rubio? All right. Sounds like a good ticket,” Trump said. “J.D. is a perfect — That was a perfect ticket.”
“By the way, I do believe that’s a dream team. But these are minor details. That does not mean you have my endorsement under any circumstance. But you know … I think it sounds like presidential candidate and vice presidential candidate,” he added.
