Utah Nurse Arrested For Poisoning Friend in Attempt to Claim Life Insurance

A Utah nurse, Meggan Randall Sundwall, 47, has been arrested for allegedly poisoning and killing her friend and former roommate, Kacee Lyn Terry, 38, in an attempt to claim a life insurance policy. Authorities say Sundwall administered a fatal dose of insulin to Terry, believing she was the beneficiary of a rumored $1.5 million policy.

In August, emergency responders were called to a home where Terry was found unresponsive and struggling to breathe.

Her uncle, who made the call, told dispatchers she had severe health issues. Sundwall, who admitted to being alone with Terry all day, told the uncle that she had been suffering for several hours. That morning, she had texted Terry asking if she wanted to take promethazine so she would be asleep “when this is happening,” according to police documents.

Although Sundwall claimed Terry had a do-not-resuscitate order and did not want to go to the hospital, no such document was found. Additionally, Terry was not diabetic, yet a diabetic needle was discovered at the scene, and her blood sugar level was dangerously low at 14.

Further investigation revealed that Terry had never been diagnosed with cancer, despite Sundwall’s claims. Her family had even moved her out of their shared apartment due to concerns about Sundwall bringing insulin home and trying to persuade her to undergo questionable treatments.

Authorities uncovered over 28,000 text messages between Sundwall and Terry dating back to 2019, including discussions of different ways to die and Sundwall’s repeated offers to “help” Terry end her life. Some messages also detailed Sundwall’s financial troubles and how she believed she could resolve them by receiving the life insurance payout.

The Utah County Jail has booked the nurse on charges of aggravated murder and obstruction of justice. The Office of the Medical Examiner confirmed Terry’s cause of death was an overdose of promethazine, probable exogenous insulin, and other drugs.
