A University of Washington research scientist is under investigation after posting a comment on X that appeared to wish death on conservatives, drawing swift backlash and renewed scrutiny of ideological hostility on college campuses. The university confirmed it is reviewing the matter after the comment circulated widely online.
The controversy involves University of Washington researcher Mara Maughan, who commented “may there be tyler robinsons for you all” in response to a post by school choice advocate Corey DeAngelis. The phrase referenced Tyler Robinson, the man charged in the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, making the comment widely viewed as endorsing political violence.
The comment was posted during an online debate over men competing in women’s sports. Although Maughan later deleted the post, screenshots spread rapidly, prompting public outrage and calls for accountability. Critics argued the statement crossed a clear moral line, especially coming from a publicly funded university employee.
The University of Washington released a short statement saying it denounces violence and is evaluating the situation under university policy and applicable law. No disciplinary decision has been announced. Maughan has not responded to media inquiries, and her public university profile has since been limited.
A representative from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression noted the comment may not meet the legal standard for a “true threat,” but acknowledged universities may still impose discipline under employee conduct rules.
The incident adds to growing concerns among conservatives about hostile campus climates, selective outrage, and tolerance of extreme rhetoric when directed at political opponents.
