United Airlines Flight Catches Fire Before Takeoff at Chicago O’Hare

A United Airlines flight halted taking off from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport after an engine reportedly caught fire Monday.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), United Flight 2091, an Airbus A320, was about to take off from the airport around 2 p.m. when an engine caught fire.

An airport spokesman said the airplane experienced an “emergency situation” upon departure and the situation was resolved “safely.”

“We are working to make alternative travel arrangements for customers,” the airline said in a statement.

The flight, headed to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, had 148 passengers on board, with five crew members.

Earlier this year, the FAA announced it was considering measures to more closely monitor United Airlines following a series of safety incidents among the airline.

The regulator discussed temporary actions it might take with the airline’s leadership including preventing the carrier from adding new routes.

“The FAA’s safety assurance system routinely monitors all aspects of an airline’s operation,” the agency said in a statement in March.

United also might be banned from flying paying customers on newly delivered aircraft, according to a report by Bloomberg News.

American Faith reported at the time that a United Airlines plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Los Angeles due to a “hydraulic failure.”

The plane, an Airbus A320 carrying around 110 people, was flying from San Francisco to Mexico City when it made an emergency stop around 4:30 p.m. at Los Angeles International Airport.

“The flight landed safely and passengers were deplaned normally at the gate,” United said.

“This aircraft type has three hydraulic systems for redundancy purposes. Preliminary information shows there was only an issue with one system on this aircraft,” the airline continued.
