Ukraine Receives $3.9 Billion U.S. Grant

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced Monday that Ukraine has received a $3.9 billion grant from the United States via the World Bank.

“This is the first tranche of direct budget support from the United States in 2024. In total, Ukraine will receive $7.8 billion in direct budgetary assistance from the United States this year, which will allow us to confidently pass this financial period,” Shmyhal said.

The Ukrainian finance ministry said the funds would be used for wages for teachers, staff of the State Emergency Service and other public employees, as well as assistance for displaced persons, low-income families and people with disabilities.

“The grant will help the Government of Ukraine to reimburse priority social and humanitarian expenditures without increasing the debt burden,” Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko said

Earlier last week, the Pentagon revealed plans to dispatch a fresh aid package for Ukraine, valued at $1.7 billion, as the nation continues its conflict with Russia.

To date, the U.S. under President Biden has allocated over $175 billion in support to Ukraine, combining economic aid and military support, since the outset of Russia’s invasion in 2022.

The latest assistance package, amounting to $1.7 billion, is set to supply Ukraine with a range of military hardware including missile and air defense ammunition, artillery shells, small arms and explosives, as well as gear for communications and electronic warfare, as per the Pentagon’s announcement.

In a statement, the Pentagon expressed, “The United States will continue to work together with some 50 Allies and partners to ensure Ukraine’s brave defenders receive the critical capabilities needed to fight Russian aggression.”

It was specified that $1.5 billion of this new package is sourced from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative funds, which recently saw a boost of $13.8 billion, part of a larger $61 billion aid package approved by Congress and the White House earlier this year, reports from the Center for Strategic and International Studies indicate.
