The U.S. Mint began circulating several coins to honor the nation’s semi-quincentennial. The updates to the coins will only last a year and will return to normal in 2027.
“The designs on these historic coins depict the story of America’s journey toward a ‘more perfect union,’ and celebrate America’s defining ideals of liberty,” U.S. Mint Acting Director Kristie McNally said in a statement. “We hope to offer each American the opportunity to hold our nation’s storied 250 years of history in the palms of their hands as we Connect America through Coins.”
Quarters include Mayflower Compact, the Revolutionary War, the Declaration of Independence, and U.S. Constitution, and the Gettysburg Address. The dime features a bald eagle and is called “Emerging Liberty,” and the nickel features Thomas Jefferson and his Monticello home with the word “liberty” written in his handwriting. Other coins will feature a “unique Liberty Bell privy mark inscribed with the numeral ‘250,’” the Mint explained.
Furthermore, the American Eagle Platinum Proof series, called “Charters of Freedom,” celebrates the nation’s founding documents the Declaration of Independence (2026), the U.S. Constitution (2027), and the Bill of Rights (2028).
Upon unveiling the designs for the coins in December, McNally said, “The designs on these historic coins depict the story of America’s journey toward a ‘more perfect union,’ and celebrate America’s defining ideals of liberty. We hope to offer each American the opportunity to hold our nation’s storied 250 years of history in the palms of their hands as we Connect America through Coins.”
