U.S. Forces Eliminate More ISIS Terrorists in Africa Days After Taking Out Global Commander

Just days after American and Nigerian forces killed the second most powerful leader of the Islamic State worldwide, the two nations launched another successful strike against the terror group’s fighters in West Africa.

U.S. Africa Command confirmed Sunday’s precision strikes eliminated several ISIS militants, continuing a devastating week for the terrorist organization’s operations on the continent. No American or Nigerian forces were harmed in the operation.

The latest blow to ISIS comes on the heels of Saturday’s raid that took out Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, the Islamic State’s global second-in-command. That operation marked one of the most significant counterterrorism victories against the group in recent memory, removing a key figure in ISIS’s worldwide leadership network.

“The removal of these terrorists diminishes the group’s capacity to plan attacks that threaten the safety and security of the U.S. and our partners,” AFRICOM stated. “AFRICOM remains committed to leveraging specialized U.S. capabilities in support of our partners to defeat shared security threats.”

The back-to-back operations represent a critical test of the joint security partnership between Washington and Abuja. Nigerian forces have worked closely with American military assets to conduct kinetic strikes against terror targets operating within their borders, and the results speak for themselves.

Upon eliminating al-Minuki, President Trump honored the “brave American forces and the Armed Forces of Nigeria” who “flawlessly executed a meticulously planned and very complex mission to eliminate the most active terrorist in the world from the battlefield.”

ISIS has expanded its footprint across Africa in recent years, seeking to establish new strongholds as its Middle Eastern territory collapsed. West Africa in particular has seen increased terror activity, with militant groups pledging allegiance to the Islamic State and conducting attacks against civilians and government forces alike.

The coordinated effort between U.S. and Nigerian forces has now dealt two severe blows to the terror group’s operational capabilities within the span of just a few days. By eliminating both leadership figures and rank-and-file fighters, the joint operations have targeted ISIS’s command structure and its ability to carry out attacks.

AFRICOM, which oversees U.S. military operations across the African continent, has positioned American capabilities to support partner nations in their fight against extremist groups. The command’s statement emphasized its commitment to continued cooperation with regional allies.

The elimination of al-Minuki removed a terrorist leader responsible for coordinating ISIS operations across multiple continents. His death, combined with Sunday’s strikes against additional militants, has significantly degraded the group’s ability to plan and execute attacks that could threaten American interests and those of U.S. allies.
