During a press conference at the NATO Summit in The Hague, U.S. President Donald Trump had a poignant exchange with a Ukrainian journalist, highlighting the growing urgency surrounding Ukraine’s defense. The moment underscored Trump’s firm stance on providing Patriot missiles to U.S. allies while balancing America’s strategic needs.
BBC Ukraine correspondent Myroslava Petsa asked whether the U.S. would sell Patriot missiles to Ukraine. She revealed her husband is a soldier currently stationed in Ukraine while she lives in Warsaw with their children. Trump responded with genuine empathy, asking twice to confirm her husband’s service. “Wow, that’s rough stuff, right? That’s tough,” he said, visibly moved.
Trump confirmed that Ukraine is seeking to purchase the advanced anti-air systems and indicated openness to making them available. “We’re going to see if we can make some available,” he said. “You know, they’re very hard to get. We need them too.”
Referencing their effectiveness in Israel, Trump added, “They’re very effective — 100% effective. Hard to believe how effective. And they do want that more than any other thing.”
Despite a measured posture on sanctions, Trump has escalated rhetoric against Russian aggression. Following a massive attack by Russia involving 300 drones and missiles, Trump described Vladimir Putin as “crazy,” signaling his impatience with Moscow’s escalating brutality.
Trump closed the emotional exchange, telling the Ukrainian journalist, “Say hello to your husband, OK? Thank you.”
