President Trump said he plans to meet with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani to “work something out.”
“The mayor of New York, I will say, would like to meet with us and we’ll work something out,” Trump told reporters, adding, “He would like to come to Washington and meet and we’ll work something out. We want to see everything work out well for New York.”
Mamdani told NBC New York last week that he will be “reaching out to the White House as we prepare to actually take office because this is a relationship that will be critical to the success of the city.”
President Trump previously condemned Mamdani’s communist aims, saying, “If you want to see what congressional Democrats wish to do to America, just look at the result of yesterday’s election in New York, where their party installed a communist as the mayor of the largest city in the nation.”
“We’re going to see how that works out,” Trump said. “We‘ll help them. We want New York to be successful. We’ll help them a little bit.”
“As long as I’m in the White House, the United States is not going communist in any way, shape, or form,” he added. “We’ll stop it. Stop this nonsense.”
New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) signaled that she has reservations regarding some of Mamdani’s campaign promises.
“We’re spending a lot of money, so I cannot set forth a plan right now that takes money out of a system that relies on the fares of the buses and the subways,” Hochul stated during an event. “But can we find a path to make it more affordable for people who need help? Of course we can.”
