President Donald Trump will meet with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan on Friday to facilitate a “Historic Peace Summit,” he announced.
The ethnic and territorial conflict between the countries surrounds the mountainous Nagorno-Karabakh region.
“I look forward to hosting the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, at the White House tomorrow for a Historic Peace Summit. These two Nations have been at War for many years, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people. Many Leaders have tried to end the War, with no success, until now, thanks to ‘TRUMP.’ My Administration has been engaged with both sides for quite some time,” he declared.
Describing the forthcoming “official Peace Signing Ceremony,” Trump added that the United States will “also sign Bilateral Agreements with both Countries to pursue Economic opportunities together, so we can fully unlock the potential of the South Caucasus Region. I am very proud of these courageous Leaders for doing the right thing for the Great People of Armenia and Azerbaijan. It will be a Historic Day for Armenia, Azerbaijan, the United States, and, THE WORLD. See you then! DJT”
The peace agreement is expected to “build a cooperative future that benefits both countries, their region of the South Caucasus and beyond,” said White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly. The transit corridor will allow “unimpeded connectivity between the two countries while respecting Armenia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and its people.”
Trump discussed the conflict between the countries while on the campaign trail ahead of the 2024 Presidential Election. “Kamala Harris did NOTHING as 120,000 Armenian Christians were horrifically persecuted and forcibly displaced in Artsakh,” he said in October. “Christians around the World will not be safe if Kamala Harris is President of the United States. When I am President, I will protect persecuted Christians, I will work to stop the violence and ethnic cleansing, and we will restore PEACE between Armenia and Azerbaijan.”
