President Trump met with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Monday, marking the first time a sitting U.S. president visited the site in decades.
The meeting occurred ahead of the United Nations General Assembly.
Following their meeting, President Trump told reporters that he hopes Mamdani will be a “great mayor.”
“I certainly hope he will be a great mayor,” he said “You have to understand, I want what’s good for New York. I want what’s good for the country.”
“I’ve been at Gracie Mansion, we were discussing, quite a few times over the years, a lot,” Trump said. “And it sort of feels like a home, and it’s a special place, a very special, a beautiful place when you go inside.”
Mamdani said of his meeting with Trump, “I told the president that we’re going to have all of the members of the press here on the lawn, and that is something that I believe in, is everyone, no matter the opinion or the critique, that we engage.” The comment was made in response to President Trump blocking particular legacy news sites, Politico, CNN, and MS NOW, from the White House.
Trump took to Truth Social to highlight his assessment of Mamdani ahead of his visit. “While in New York City, I’m on the way to one of my favorite places in the World, Gracie Mansion,” Trump wrote. “I spent lots of hours there over the years, with some great Mayors, some average Mayors, and some bad Mayors. It will be interesting to see how it looks now, invited by Mayor Mamdani. Look forward to it. MAKE NEW YORK CITY GREAT AGAIN!”
President Trump first met Mamdani in November 2025.
