President Trump’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2027 asks Congress for $1.5 trillion in defense spending. Reports indicate that the number is a 42% increase from past budgets. Non-defense spending is cut by $73 billion.
“President Trump is committed to rebuilding our military to secure peace through strength,” a White House summary of the military portion of the budget reads. “The President’s historic FY 2027 Budget fully funds the Golden Dome to protect the homeland, invests in our critical minerals and munitions, and provides a pay raise for military personnel.”
According to reports, the budget seeks to invest $66 billion into Navy shipbuilding, including 34 warships and support vessels. Those in the military would also receive a pay raise.
“This amount exceeds even the Reagan buildup by approaching the historic increases just prior to World War II, a level that recognizes the current global threat environment and restores the readiness and lethality of our forces,” it adds. “The whole of government, whole of nation shipbuilding order of 41 ships alone represents the largest demand signal to the maritime industrial base since the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt.”
According to the White House, the budget also saves taxpayer dollars. “The Budget maximizes value to the American taxpayer by ceasing unnecessary spending and excessive bureaucracy, ensuring that the Pentagon is laser-focused on its mission and not on woke frivolities,” it says. “The Budget continues to eliminate millions of dollars in wasteful and egregious spending related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and other ‘woke’ programs, sustaining the more than $1.6 billion in reductions that the Administration has already identified.”
