Florida Representative Matt Gaetz has nominated President Donald J. Trump for Speaker of the House.
The current voting process for the position has seen establishment leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) repeatedly fail to secure the required 218 votes, prompting calls for Trump to be nominated and elected to the role.
The Speaker of the House is not required to be a member of Congress, according to the Constitution.
Representative Gaetz, a vocal critic of McCarthy, gave a speech on the floor before casting his vote for President Trump’s nomination.
In a recent social media post, President Trump shared a doctored image of himself in the Speaker’s chair alongside Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
