President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Pete Hegseth, former co-host of “FOX & Friends Weekend” and an Army National Guard veteran, to serve as Secretary of Defense.
In a statement, Trump praised Hegseth’s lifelong dedication to America, stating, “Pete has spent his entire life as a Warrior for the Troops, and for the Country. Pete is tough, smart and a true believer in America First.” Trump added that with Hegseth leading the Defense Department, “America’s enemies are on notice—Our Military will be Great Again, and America will Never Back Down.”
Hegseth’s military background includes tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, earning him two Bronze Stars and a Combat Infantryman’s Badge.
He has been a strong advocate for veterans and military causes, gaining recognition for his work both on and off the screen. His recent book, War on Warriors, became a New York Times bestseller.
Sen. Tommy Tuberville, (R-AL), expressed initial hesitation, saying, “I’d have to think about it,” while Sen. John Hoeven, (R-ND), noted the positive reactions from military members and said he looks forward to working with Hegseth.
Rep. Mike Waltz, (R-FL), a former Army National Guard officer, called Hegseth a “combat decorated veteran” who has the “grit” to bring real reform to the Pentagon, while Sen. Ted Budd, (R-NC), described him as “an amazing individual.”
On the other hand, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, (D-MA), criticized the nomination, claiming that “a Fox & Friends weekend co-host is not qualified to be the Secretary of Defense” and arguing that Trump’s choice “will make us less safe and must be rejected.”
Hegseth, who has been a significant media presence on FOX News since 2014, stepped down from his role to prepare for his duties in Washington.
