Rep. John Larson (D-CT) introduced articles of impeachment against President Trump, charging him with “murder, war crimes and piracy” due to his intervention in Venezuela, deploying the National Guard, and attempting to halt birthright citizenship.
The resolution condemns Trump for what it says is “initiating war and murdering scores of putative but unproved drug traffickers in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific,” committing war crimes,” and “blockading Venezuela.”
“Mr. Trump has unconstitutionally initiated war as a belligerent or co belligerent against Iran, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, Nigeria, and Gaza. He has threatened military force against Panama, Colombia, Cuba, and Greenland,” the resolution states. “In all of these endeavors, President Trump has acted without constitutionally required congressional authorization.” It goes on to describe these actions as “criminal lawlessness.”
“Through his serial usurpation of the congressional war power and commission of murder, war crimes, and piracy, Donald J. Trump has acted contrary to his trust as President and subversive of constitutional government, to the great prejudice of law, liberty, and justice and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States,” it adds.
Several Democrats have voiced a desire to impeach President Trump should they retake the House.
“He should be impeached now. He’s taken us into a disastrous war, threatening war crimes in Iran, in terms of knocking out plants, and knocking out electricity,” Rep. Ro Khanna said (D-CA). “And the Democrats will impeach him once we take back the House, and should impeach him for all the things he’s done.”
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) also declined to rule out a future impeachment effort against Trump should Democrats take back congressional power.
