Donald Trump’s designated Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, issued a stern warning Monday regarding hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. Speaking during a visit to the region, Witkoff stated it would “not be a pretty day” if the hostages were not released before President-elect Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2024.
Witkoff, set to officially assume his role in the new administration, emphasized Trump’s firm stance on the issue. He referenced Trump’s social media warning that there would be “hell to pay” if the hostages remained captive. Witkoff said, “Listen to what the president has got to say,” adding that the release of the hostages is non-negotiable. He also expressed hope for a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel before the transfer of power but indicated that the incoming administration is prepared to act decisively.
The hostage crisis stems from Hamas’s October 7, 2023, terrorist attack on Israel, which killed 1,200 people and resulted in more than 250 individuals being taken captive. Negotiations and military operations have since secured the release of over 100 hostages, yet approximately 101 remain in Gaza. Israeli authorities estimate that roughly half of those still held are alive.
Witkoff made his remarks during a Bitcoin conference in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The event, which drew over 6,000 attendees, underscored the global stage on which this crisis is unfolding. Special access to some sessions cost as much as $9,999, reflecting the high-profile nature of the gathering.
Resolving the hostage situation is a top priority for the Trump administration. Witkoff’s comments highlight the incoming government’s determination to address the issue swiftly and assertively. The international community is watching closely as January 20 approaches, awaiting potential developments in the escalating crisis.
