President Donald Trump is considering a cut in tariffs on China.
“80% Tariff on China seems right!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Up to Scott B.”
The president also called for China to “open up its market to USA,” stating that it would be “so good for them!!!” He emphasised that “closed markets don’t work anymore!!!”
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is set to meet with Chinese officials in Geneva, Switzerland, over the weekend to discuss trade deals.
“At President Trump’s direction, I am negotiating with countries to rebalance our trade relations to achieve reciprocity, open new markets, and protect America’s economic and national security,” Ambassador Greer said in a statement. “I look forward to having productive meetings with some of my counterparts as well as visiting with my team in Geneva who all work diligently to advance U.S. interests on a range of multilateral issues.”
The development comes as the United States reached a historic trade deal with the United Kingdom.
The trade deal includes “billions of dollars of increased market access for American exports, especially in agriculture, dramatically increasing access for American beef, ethanol, and virtually all of the products produced by our great farmers,” Trump said. “The U.K. will reduce or eliminate numerous non-tariff barriers that unfairly discriminated against American products.”
Prime Minister Kier Starmer said the deal will “boost trade between and across our countries. It’s going to not only protect jobs but create jobs.”
“President Trump continues to advance the interests of the American people, enhancing market access for American exporters and lowering tariff and non-tariff barriers to protect our economic and national security,” a White House fact sheet on the trade deal states.
