President Donald Trump personally called Amazon founder Jeff Bezos on Tuesday to address reports that the company planned to highlight tariff-related price increases on its platform — a move viewed by the Trump administration as a political jab. The call came in response to a report by CNN’s Alayna Treene, who cited two anonymous senior White House officials.
A source confirmed to Breitbart News that the call between Trump and Bezos took place Tuesday morning. The reported Amazon initiative, first detailed by Punchbowl News, claimed the retail giant intended to publicly display how tariffs under Trump’s trade policies were affecting consumer prices.
The Trump White House quickly responded with skepticism. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt slammed the alleged plan as “hostile and political,” questioning the timing and motives behind the move. “Why didn’t Amazon do this when the Biden administration hiked inflation to the highest level in 40 years?” Leavitt asked.
Amazon denied the report, distancing itself from the claim and insisting no such plan was in place. Still, the administration’s concern highlighted broader tensions between Trump’s America First trade agenda and multinational corporations seen as too cozy with foreign interests — especially China.
Leavitt doubled down, citing a 2021 Reuters article that exposed Amazon’s collaboration with a Chinese propaganda outlet. She used the opportunity to renew the administration’s push for American-made products and domestic manufacturing. “This is another reason why Americans should buy American,” she said, adding that the administration remains committed to onshoring critical supply chains and securing national economic independence.
The clash underscores growing scrutiny of Big Tech’s alignment with foreign powers and its influence over U.S. economic and political narratives.
