President Donald Trump’s renewed focus on border security has led to a near-total elimination of the catch-and-release policy at the U.S.-Mexico border, marking a 99.99% reduction compared to peak levels under former President Joe Biden.
According to newly highlighted data from the White House, only 20 migrants apprehended by Border Patrol in February were released into the United States. This contrasts sharply with December 2023, when nearly 200,000 illegal immigrants were caught and then released under the Biden administration.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt credited the dramatic decline to President Trump’s decisive policies. “Thanks to President Trump, operational control of the border is becoming a reality,” Leavitt said. “Illegal aliens are finally getting the blunt message: If you cross the border illegally, you will be swiftly deported and never return to the United States of America.”
The Washington Times reported that under Biden, 778 out of every 1,000 border crossers were released. That number dropped to just two per 1,000 by February under Trump’s current enforcement strategy.
In addition to tightening border enforcement, President Trump has ramped up capacity within Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Detention centers are currently filled to capacity, with nearly 48,000 illegal aliens in custody. To expand detention capabilities, the administration is reopening a facility in Newark, New Jersey, which will provide 1,000 additional beds.
This expansion is aimed at ensuring criminal illegal aliens are held securely and processed for removal, rather than released into the country. The administration’s strategy reinforces the America First agenda and sends a clear message to potential border crossers: unlawful entry will no longer be tolerated or overlooked.
President Trump’s decisive action marks a stark reversal from the open-border policies seen under the previous administration. By reinstating strict enforcement and zero-tolerance measures, the administration has restored a level of control not seen in years. This shift is not only curbing illegal immigration but also deterring future attempts, as the consequences for unlawful entry become swift and certain.
In tandem with enforcement, the Trump administration is pushing for additional legislative support to build on its gains. Proposals include tougher penalties for repeat offenders, expanded deportation authority, and fast-tracking immigration court proceedings. These efforts are designed to fortify the system against abuse while prioritizing national security and the rule of law.
