The alleged would-be assassin of former President Donald Trump, Ryan Routh, reportedly concealed himself in a sniper’s nest for nearly 12 hours before being discovered.
“Routh’s cell phone pinged to the spot on the edge of Trump International West Palm Beach starting from 1:59 a.m. on Sunday, the federal criminal complaint said,” the New York Post reported. “His gun barrel was spotted by a Secret Service agent about 1:30 p.m. — while Trump was on the links 300-500 yards away.”
Law enforcement agents later found a digital camera, bags, and a loaded SKS-style rifle in the hiding spot.
After Secret Service agents opened fire, the suspect fled in a vehicle with stolen plates but was apprehended on I-95.
Routh, appearing in court Monday, laughed and smiled during his first appearance.
According to Fox News, Routh walked into court, laughing three or four times as he spoke to his attorney.
The information comes from the outlet’s observances, as no cameras were permitted inside the hearing.
Routh has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. Additional charges may be filed against him as the investigation continues.
The 58-year-old faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted on the first charge and up to 5 years if convicted on the second.
U.S. Attorney Adam McMichael asked that Routh remain in custody, saying the suspect is a pre-trial flight risk.
Routh’s detention hearing is scheduled for September 23, and the probable cause hearing is set for September 30.
