President-elect Donald Trump announced on Friday his nomination of Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, (R-OR), to serve as Secretary of Labor.
Chavez-DeRemer, first elected to Congress in 2022, is known for her pragmatic approach to governance and strong ties to working-class communities. Although she narrowly lost her re-election bid earlier this month to Democrat Janelle Bynum, her record of standing up for American workers made her a natural choice for the position.
“I am proud to hereby nominate Congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer, from the Great State of Oregon, as United States Secretary of Labor,” Trump wrote in an official statement. “Lori has worked tirelessly with both Business and Labor to build America’s workforce, and support the hardworking men and women of America. I look forward to working with her to create tremendous opportunity for American Workers, to expand Training and Apprenticeships, to grow wages and improve working conditions, to bring back our Manufacturing jobs. Together, we will achieve historic cooperation between Business and Labor that will restore the American Dream for Working Families.”
Her nomination has received significant support, including backing from the influential Teamsters Union. This partnership reflects the Trump administration’s continued effort to expand the Republican Party’s appeal to union workers and bolster its pro-worker agenda heading into 2024.
Chavez-DeRemer is the fourth House Republican selected to join the incoming administration, alongside leaders like House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, (R-NY), and Rep. Mike Waltz, (R-FL), Rep. Matt Gaetz, (R-FL), was also considered but withdrew from the process on Thursday.
He added, “Lori’s strong support from both the Business and Labor communities will ensure that the Labor Department can unite Americans of all backgrounds behind our Agenda for unprecedented National Success – Making America Richer, Wealthier, Stronger and more Prosperous than ever before!”
