President Donald Trump said he is open to the Senate making changes to his “big, beautiful bill.”
“I want the Senate and the senators to make the changes they want, and we’ll go back to the House and we’ll see if we can get them,” Trump told reporters. “In some cases, the changes may be something I’d agree with, to be honest.”
“We’ve had a very good response from the Senate, and I don’t know how Democrats can’t vote for it,” Trump continued, adding, “I think they [Senate Republicans] are going to have changes. Some will be minor, some will be fairly significant.”
Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) suggested that the Senate has enough momentum to stop the bill’s advancement. “This is our moment. We have witnessed an unprecedented level of increased spending, 58% since 2019, other than World War II. This is our only chance to reset that to a reasonable pre-pandemic level of spending.”
“Again, I think you can do it, and the spending that we would eliminate, people wouldn’t even notice,” he said.
Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has also warned against the bill, telling Fox News that the bill may be fiscally irresponsible.
Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has defended the bill, noting that its $1.5 trillion in spending cuts are among the most substantial reductions in decades.
The Trump-backed bill cleared the House of Representatives last week in a 215 – 214 vote. Trump said at the time that the bill is “arguably the most significant piece of Legislation that will ever be signed in the History of our Country! The Bill includes MASSIVE Tax CUTS, No Tax on Tips, No Tax on Overtime, Tax Deductions when you purchase an American Made Vehicle, along with strong Border Security measures.”
