Trump Abruptly Departs G7 Over Escalating Middle East Conflict

President Trump cut short his attendance at the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada, returning to Washington early amid intensifying Israel-Iran tensions. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the decision comes “because of what’s going on in the Middle East,” following several days of strikes between the two nations .

Trump left just after the state dinner, having already secured a trade deal with the UK’s Keir Starmer. His departure also followed his call on Truth Social for the “immediate evacuation” of Tehran after Iran rebuffed a nuclear deal, marking a clear escalation.

French President Macron revealed Trump even proposed a ceasefire initiative and urged Iran to evacuate Tehran and de-escalate tensions . In response to the crisis, Trump asked the National Security Council to be on alert as he returned home .

During the summit, Trump also refused to back a G7 joint statement calling for Israel-Iran de-escalation and defended the 2014 decision to expel Russia from the G8—suggesting that excluding Putin may have contributed to the Ukraine war.
