A study by the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) suggests TikTok’s algorithm recommends content such as self-harm or eating disorders within minutes of creating an account. In conducting the study, researchers posed as 13-year-olds interested in mental health and body image. Within 2.6 minutes, algorithms pushed suicidal material, eating disorder videos pushed within 8 minutes.
From Breitbart:
During the course of the study, researchers discovered 56 TikTok hashtags hosting eating disorder videos with over 13.2 billion views. James P. Steyer, Founder and CEO of Common Sense Media, commented on the study stating: The new report by the Center for Countering Digital Hate underscores why it is way past time for TikTok to take steps to address the platform’s dangerous algorithmic amplification. TikTok’s algorithm is bombarding teens with harmful content that promote suicide, eating disorders, and body image issues that is fueling the teens’ mental health crisis.
