The Housemaid has officially crossed the $200 million milestone at the global box office, following its theatrical debut on December 19. The psychological thriller stars Sydney Sweeney as Millie, a live-in housekeeper who begins to uncover disturbing truths about her employers, played by Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar.
Based on the bestselling novel by Freida McFadden, the film quickly became a breakout hit, thanks to its gripping plot and strong performances. Michele Morrone and Elizabeth Perkins round out the supporting cast, adding further depth to the dark and twist-filled storyline. Directed by Paul Feig, The Housemaid has exceeded expectations both domestically and internationally, even topping blockbuster titles in overseas markets such as Avatar: Fire and Ash and the Zootopia sequel in the U.K.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson credited the film’s success to the early recognition of McFadden’s novel trilogy by the studio’s team. “Paul Feig surpassed expectations by delivering a thriller that’s everything audiences have been asking for,” Fogelson said, noting that Lionsgate’s team — particularly the women within the company — saw the story’s cinematic potential before it became a massive literary success.
The momentum has already sparked plans for a sequel. Sweeney and Morrone are confirmed to return in The Housemaid’s Secret, which is expected to begin filming later this year. Though no official release date has been announced, anticipation is high among fans of both the film and McFadden’s book series.
With box office numbers continuing to climb and growing global interest, The Housemaid has firmly established itself as a major new thriller franchise poised to grow in the years ahead.
