Texas Gov. Greg Abbott identified the gunman in an elementary school shooting that left at least 14 students and one teacher dead as 18-year-old Salvador Ramos during a press conference Tuesday.

The shooting took place at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, the town where Ramos was from, according to Abbott.

“It is believed he abandoned his vehicle and entered into the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde with a handgun and he may have also had a rifle but that is not yet confirmed according to my most recent report,” Abbott said.

Ramos is now dead, according to Abbott, and it is believed that responding officers killed him.

Ramos also allegedly shot his grandmother, ABC News reported.

The Associated Press originally reported that two people had been killed in the shooting with more than a dozen children hospitalized.

Uvalde is located about 85 miles west of San Antonio.

It still remains unclear the health of the surviving children as well as if the dead are included in the hospitalized count, per the AP.

A 66-year-old woman is said to be in critical condition at University Hospital in San Antonio, the AP said.

Robb Elementary School has an enrollment of around 600 students the AP reported.

Abbott said he has instructed the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers to investigate the shooting alongside local law enforcement officials.

Abbott called the incident a horrific loss and urged all Texans to come together “to show unwavering support to all who are suffering,” in a statement.
